ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA made a valiant effort to get back in the game, but another early deficit was too much to overcome as Little Rock beat the Mavs 9-7 Saturday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Andrew Miller went 3-for-5 from the plate and batter in three of the Mavs' runs.
Zac Cook got two hits of his own and crossed the plate three times.
The game followed a similar script to the series opener with the Trojans scoring five runs in the first inning on just three hits.
Little Rock loaded the bases before UTA (19-13, 7-4 SBC) recorded an out in the inning.
Riley Bost came on in relief for the Mavs to close the inning.
UTA began chipping away at the lead with an
Anthony Dominguez singled to drive
Zac Cook home for the Mavs' first run of the day.
The Trojans (13-18, 7-4) got the run back in the top of the second with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Mavs started swinging the bats well in the bottom of the third to the tune of four hits and three runs.
Cook, Dominguez and
Will Olson all reached base to load the bases with no outs. During the next at-bat, Cook came home on a wild pitch for his second run of the game. Later in the at-bat,
Andrew Miller cleared the bases with a single to center field to get UTA within a pair of runs.
Little Rock scored a couple of runs in the top of the sixth to double up UTA 8-4. On three consecutive at-bats, Dominguez, Olson and Miller each drove in a run to make it a one-run game.
Little Rock again kept UTA at bay with a run in the top of the seventh to give the Trojans a two-run cushion that was eventually the final margin.
UTA will try to salvage the series tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
