ARLINGTON, Texas – Two players in the middle of historic seasons continue to hear their named called on postseason awards, as UT Arlington softball players
Whitney Walton and
Laura Curry received NFCA All-Central Region honors, announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Association on Thursday.
Â
The pair become the seventh and eighth players in UTA history to receive the honor, joining teammates
Reagan Wright (2018) and
Krista Rude (2016) as active members. Curry, also a 2017 All-Region selection, becomes the first Maverick to be selected multiple times.
Â
Walton, selected to the Second Team, was constantly in position to score from her leadoff position, crossing home plate a record 57 times this season, shattering the previous mark of 44. She is also second on the team in batting average (.389) and hits (68). Her fifteen doubles are the fifth most in a single-season and fourth in the Sun Belt.
Â
Curry followed up her 2018 All-Region selection with a Third Team selection this season. Having one of the best offensive seasons in UTA history, Curry has already broken the single-season hits record (79) and has the second-best batting average in a season, as well (.429). Both of those marks not only lead the Sun Belt Conference, but also place her among the nation's leaders in both categories.
Â
The NFCA announced that 392 student-athletes from 163 programs have received 2019 NFCA Division I All-Region accolades.Â
Â
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for the 2019 NFCA Division I All-America squads.
Â
Walton and Curry, as well as the rest of the Maverick squad, are set to open up the NISC Nacogdoches Regional tonight at 6 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin.
