ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's track and field team is after the Sun Belt Conference "Triple Crown" this weekend, while the women's squad will look to post its highest finish ever this weekend at the Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Jonesboro, Ark.
Â
The men's team won the SBC cross country crown in the fall and the indoor track title this winter, which has the Mavericks positioned for a chance at their third triple crown (2013-14, 2016-17) since joining the Sun Belt in 2013-14.
Â
The men placed third at conference last year, while the women took fourth. In five years in the league, the men have won championships three times (2014, 2015 and 2017) and also have third- and fourth-place showings.
Â
Meanwhile, the women have placed among the top-half of the field of 12 teams all five seasons, with a best placement of third, which came in Arlington in 2017.
Â
Twenty-one Mavericks, 15 men and six women, hold down top-five spots in their respective events heading into the league championship, which will be run Friday through Sunday at the A-State Track & Field Complex.
Â
Among the standouts competing for UTA is reigning SBC Outdoor Most Outstanding Men's Track Athlete,
Justin Domangue. Last year, Domangue won the 10,000 meters and was the runner up in the 5000m in 2018.
Â
In addition,
Erik Martinsson claimed the SBC Indoor Outstanding Men's Track Athlete honor after doubling in the 400 meters and 800 meters. He currently sits atop the conference board in the 800m and is ranked 18th nationally in the event.
Â
On the women's side,
Alexus Henry has won the past two high jump titles at Sun Belt meets, taking first at the 2018 outdoor event and the 2019 indoor meet.
Â
Despite being in the league for just five years, the Mavericks have their share of championships records as well. The men's team's 166 points in 2015 are the most by any squad in the past 15 years. Individually, among current Mavs, Martinsson set the standard in the 800 meters in 2017 (1:48.72).
Â
In 2015, the Mavericks broke records in three events. Leading the way was Clayton Vaughn, who obliterated the men's Sun Belt and UTA 100-meter record, running a 9.93. Also for the men, Emil Blomberg cruised in the men's 3000m steeplechase (9:00.74). On the women's side, Ashly Wright won the 800 meters with a SBC meet record time of 2:07.34.
Â
Action at this year's championships begins Friday morning with the multi-events (decathlon at 9 a.m. and heptathlon at 9:30 a.m.).
