ARLINGTON, Texas – Former UTA standout Hunter Pence was named an American League starter for the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game on Thursday night (June 27). The MLB All-Star Game will be held on July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland and can be seen live on Fox (6:30 p.m. CT).
Pence was the leading vote-getter among AL designated hitter candidates, as he earned the fourth All-Star selection of his 13-year major league career. He won the voting over finalists J.D. Martinez (Boston Red Sox) and Nelson Cruz (Minnesota Twins).
A former member of the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants, Pence has a pair of World Series rings with the Giants (2012, 2014) and will be making his first All-Star Game appearance as a starter. Pence's 2019 All-Star selection also marks the first time he appeared on the ballot as a DH rather than an outfielder. He earned two All-Star selections in 2009 and 2011 as a member of the Astros and picked up his third career All-Star nod in 2014 as a member of the Giants
Pence, in his first season with his hometown Texas Rangers, is currently on the Rangers' 10-day injured list with a groin injury, but it is possible that he'll return in time to start the All-Star Game. At the time of his injury, the Fort Worth native was hitting .294 with 15 homers and was tied for fifth in the AL in RBIs (48). He also had a .962 OPS at the time of his injury.
A member of the UT Arlington Hall of Honor, Pence spent two years playing for the Mavericks (2003, 2004), picking up a pair of Southland Conference First-Team honors and the 2004 Southland Conference Player of the Year award. In two seasons with the Mavs, he hit .371 with a .571 slugging percentage and 11 triples. He was taken 64th overall (2nd Round) by the Astros in 2004 and made his MLB debut with Houston in 2007.
