ARLINGTON, Texas -Â Entering his sixth season with UT Arlington baseball, Jon Wente has been promoted to Associate Head Baseball Coach as announced by UTA baseball Head Coach Darin Thomas. Wente manages all aspects of UTA's pitching staff, while using his experience as a former head coach to thoroughly impact the entire program.
"I am very thankful for this promotion," said Wente. "I want to thank Coach Thomas, Athletic Director Jim Baker, Associate AD Tony Burken and Fuller Smith for this opportunity. I appreciate Coach Thomas' mentorship over the years. He is truly a great leader and a great example of how to run a program. I look forward to building on the successes of last year and working with our great student-athletes."
"I feel very fortunate to have Coach Wente as a part of our staff at UTA," said Thomas. "I really lean on him on a daily basis. He has been and remains invested in helping lead Mavs baseball to Sun Belt championships and I am excited to give him this well-deserved promotion."
A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a former pitcher at Arizona State and McNeese State, Wente was the head coach at Central Arizona College (2005-14) prior to making the move to UTA. His teams won six consecutive Region I championships (2007-12) and four consecutive conference championships (2011-14). He was the Region I Coach of the Year six times (2007-12), the conference Coach of the Year in 2011, and the West District Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2011. He also served as the head coach at Odessa College (2005) and Hutchinson College (2003-04), before a decorated career at Central Arizona.
Wente's drastic impact on the success of the UTA program took hold in 2017, as the Mavs claimed the Sun Belt Conference Western Division Championship with a school-record 20-10 record in league play. UTA was paced throughout the year by a competitive weekend rotation, which featured two newcomers to earn All-Conference honors, Trae Patterson and Jakob Hernandez. His pitching staff finished the 2017 season ranked as the league leader in saves (18) and second in ERA (3.27), while allowing the fewest walks and homers of any team in the conference.
