Lone Star Invitational On Tap For @UTAMavsMGolf To Begin 2019-20 Season
9/13/2019 2:22:00 PM | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO – The UT Arlington men's golf team gets its 2019-20 season underway this coming Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16-17, at UTSA's Lone Star Invitational from the TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course.
Â
The Mavericks return a strong core which established some of the best team and individual performances in program history during a stout spring campaign to cap the 2018-19 season, and UTA will be looking to carry that momentum over into 2019-20.
Â
Action will get underway on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The 11-team field will play 36 continuous holes before concluding the 54-hole event with the final round on Tuesday, commencing with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat by clicking here.
Â
The Mavs will get a good early look at how they – and several other Sun Belt Conference members – fare on one of the most difficult courses on the PGA Tour year-in-and-year-out. At 7,435 yards, the par-72 TPC San Antonio has typically played over par for the world's best players since it began hosting the Valero Texas Open shortly after its opening in 2010.
Â
Including UTA, five Sun Belt schools will be in the field: Little Rock, Louisiana, South Alabama and ULM. All told, five of the 11 teams in the invitational finished last year ranked in the Golfstat Top 100, with UTA just outside of that at No. 115.
Â
Below is the UTA five-man lineup, plus an individual, that will challenge the Greg Norman-designed AT&T Oaks Course:
Â
1) Paul Gonzalez
2) Caleb Hicks
3) Kyle Cox
4) Daniel Cronje
5) Zakary Jones
Ind.) Zach Cole
Â
Gonzalez returns for his junior campaign after leading UTA in scoring average last year with a 72.9 – the 7th-best in single-season program history. He had 12 par-or-better rounds, a team-best 69.8 finish percentage and four rounds in the 60s, led by a career-low 66 (-5) in the final round of the Sun Belt Championship. He enters this year with the program's 3rd-best career scoring average at 73.42 over 62 rounds; only Zack Fischer (73.10 in 129 rounds) and Paul McConnell (73.17 in 103 rounds) are better.
Â
Hicks is coming off a 75.03 scoring average as a freshman last year in which he posted eight par-or-better rounds. Two of those were season- and career-lows of 68 – one of which came in the final round of the Sun Belt Championship.
Â
Cox, Hicks and Gonzalez all teed it up in each of UTA's 11 tournaments last year, joining recently-graduated Tanner Gore as the only four individuals to accomplish that feat. Entering his sophomore campaign, Cox will look to build off a freshman slate in which he had a 74.19 scoring average to rank 3rd on the team. He secured 10 par-or-better rounds, including three in the 60s.
Â
Cronje will make his collegiate debut as the true freshman cracks the lineup in his first attempt. The No. 10-ranked junior golfer in South Africa coming out of Paarl Boys High School, he was a five-year letterwinner and two-time captain of his team. He led his team to South Africa Nationals four times, winning the 2016 championship and coming in 3rd in 2018; he finished 4th individually in 2018 with rounds of 71-71 (-2). He has been the No. 1-ranked junior golfer in his province (Boland) the last two years.
Â
Jones played in three tournaments – all in the fall – as a freshman last year. He competed in the team lineup twice, and played as an individual once to conclude the fall season.
Â
Cole heads into his redshirt junior season having teed it up in just three tournaments over his first two years. In those nine rounds, he has a career scoring average of 76.56.
Â
This is the 11th edition of the Lone Star Invitational; in 2010, UTA won the second showing with an 855 (-9) total.
Â
Following action in San Antonio, the Mavs will have the remainder of the month off from tournament play before returning to the course Oct. 7-8 at Colorado's Mark Simpson Invitational – the first of three-straight weeks of events to conclude the fall portion of the docket.
