Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – After battling with the weather for three days, the UT Arlington women's tennis team finish play at the Rice Invitational, with each of their players earning the right to play three matches at the invite.
Lucia Natal played in Flight 3 for the Mavericks. She defeated Alabama's Luca Fabian 7-5, 6-2 in the first round to advance to the semifinals of the flight, but fell to Arkansas's Lauren Alter 6-3, 6-2. Natal bounced back in the third-place match, winning 6-1, 7-5 over Houston's Mimi Kendall-Woseley.
In Flight 6,
Momoka Horiguchi found her way to the Consolations Championship after losing her first-round match 6-1, 4-6 10-8. In the championship match, she fell to Houston's Ndindi Ndunda 6-3, 7-6.Â
Liz Chileno also played in Flight 6. She lost her first two matches, but ended on a positive note, defeating Houston's Phonexay Chitdara 3-6, 7-6, 10-8.
In Flight 7,
Nanaka Takeuchi defeated Sam Houston's Lusine Chobanyan 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 in the first round before falling in the second round. She bounced back to take the third-place match over North Texas's Alexandra Heczey 7-5, 3-6, 10-4.
Doubles play was cut short due to weather, but the Mavericks still showed promise in the matches they played. Natal and
Aida Garcia Mendez teamed up in Flight 3, making it to the championship match with wins over Sam Houston State, 7-5, and Texas A&M Corpus Chrisiti, 6-3. They were unable to play the championship match due to weather.
Joining Garcia Mendez and Natal in Flight 3 was
Nanaka Takeuchi and
Polina Akimova. The Maverick tandem won their only match they were able to play with a 6-3 win over Sam Houston's Lusine Chobanyan and Rosalie Gerritsen.
In Flight 4, Horiguchi and Chileno teamed up, winning their first match over Sam Houston's team, 6-3. The Mavericks fell in the semi-finals of the tournament to Texas A&M Corpus Christi team of Carolina Bulatovic and Jordan Ortega Mendez, 6-3.
The Mavericks will stay in the Metroplex this weekend when they travel to Dallas to play in the SMU Invitational from October 4 through October 6.
