DENTON, Texas – Senior
Justin Domangue won the men's individual title, while the men's and women's teams both finished second under the blazing sun at the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday.
Competing in his first meet of the season, Domangue won the men's 4-mile race at Discovery Park in tough conditions with a time of 20:11.96. It was his second career cross country victory, as he previously claimed the 2017 Gerald Richey Invitational.
Junior
Cole Klashinsky had a runner-up finish in 20:25.61. It was his third career top-five finish and the best result of his career.
Jack Myers was the third Maverick finisher, crossing the line in seventh place (21:07.70). UTA's final point scorers were
Victor Bocanegra (9th, 21:24.64) and
Marquentin Barnes (10th, 21:28.35).
Men finished second among three schools with 29 points, just three behind North Texas (26). TCU had 85 points.
The women totaled 53 points to finish three points behind champion SMU (53). The remainder of the teams included: North Texas (68), TCU (83), St. Edward's (109) and Texas Wesleyan (144).
Senior
Shayla Huebner led the team for the second time in as many meets, placing fifth among the field of 42 runners. She navigated the 5k circuit in 19:11.54.
Valeria Diaz snagged a 10th-place finish in 19:31.21. In addition,
Madeleine Rowe (12th, 19:51.24),
Mathilde Ruud (13th, 20:01.16) and
Bailey Villalon (15th, 20:14.45) all placed among the top 15.
"We still have a lot of work to do as we continue to prepare for conference," coach
John Sauerhage said. "But we have solid groups on both sides, and will get back to work. We are excited to host our meet next weekend."
Next Saturday (Sept. 14), the Mavericks will host their annual home meet, the Gerald Richey Invitational, at the Jesse Owens Sports Complex in Dallas. It is the first time that the Mavs have hosted the meet at the UIL Regional Championship course. Richey, the meet's namesake and longtime UTA and Arlington High School coach, passed away last week at the age of 83.
