MOBILE, Ala. – Four players scored in double figures as the UT Arlington women's basketball team defeated South Alabama, 68-45, snapping the Jaguars' three-game winning streak on Thursday night (Jan. 23) at the Mitchell Center.
With the win, UTA improves to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in Sun Belt play, while South Alabama falls to 9-10 on the season and 4-3 in league action.
Misty Dossey led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 14 points. The sophomore also grabbed four boards and registered a pair of steals.
Marie Benson recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Claire Chastain added 13 points and six rebounds, while
Aysia Evans chipped in with 10 points.
UTA won the battle of the boards (48-34) and also outscored the Jaguars 34-18 in the paint.
UTA shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the floor in the opening quarter to take a 13-point lead after 10 minutes of play. USA was limited to just 21.4 percent shooting (3-of-14) and forced into 6 turnovers in the first quarter.
The home team fought back in the second quarter, using a 7-2 run over the final 1:35 to pull within 6 points at the half (38-32).
In the third quarter, the Jaguars went over six minutes without a point and trailed 52-39 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
UTA opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to push their led to 20 points (59-39) and never looked back. The Lady Mavs increased their lead to as many as 25 points before securing the win.
The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 25) when they face Troy (15-3, 6-1 SBC) on the road in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference. Tip off for the contest is set for 2:00 p.m.
