WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team will travel to Waco to participate in the ITA Texas Regional this Friday through Sunday (Oct. 23-25) at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.
"We feel very fortunate that the Texas Region was able to keep the tournament," said head coach Diego Benitez. "All the coaches worked together to make sure we kept the tournament for the players, and that is not the case in a lot of regions across the country."
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country with student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges competing.
"The guys have worked tirelessly the last couple weeks to prepare for the tournament," said Benitez. "This will be our first time playing doubles competition and the guys are excited to be able to compete in the best Regional in the country."
A season ago, now-sophomore Angel Diaz put himself on the map with a quarter-finals appearance in the prestigious tournament. Miguel Cabrera also found success, defeating the No. 2 seed and No. 14 nationally ranked player a season ago. In doubles competition, Alejandro Hayen and Alan Sau Franco will look to improve upon their Sweet 16 appearance in the tournament from last season.
In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
