HUMBLE, Texas – The UT Arlington men's golf team tees off its 2020 spring season Sunday when the Mavericks head to the All American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston to go up against one of strongest fields they'll face all year.
Â
Co-hosted by Houston and Rice, the All American Intercollegiate features 13 schools – all of which are ranked inside the top 150 of the nation. Five of those reside in the top 100 and three are in the top 35, led by #8 Wake Forest.
Â
The 54-hole tournament will be contested with one round each on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Each round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with tee times off the 1st and 10th holes. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat by clicking here; updates will be posted on the official Twitter account of the program: @UTAMavsMGolf.
Â
The Mavericks will utilize the following five-man lineup as they tee it up for the first time in competitive team action since mid-October:
Â
1) Kyle Cox
2) Paul Gonzalez
3) Caleb Hicks
4) Zach Cole
5) Daniel Cronje
Â
The Mavs' quintet will be teeing it up on the par-72, 7067-yard layout which has played host to the PGA Tour's Houston Open since 2003. Last year in this same event, UTA shot rounds of 295 and 309 before the final round was canceled due to weather.
Â
RECORD PACE
Last spring, UTA jumpstarted its great play which has carried over for almost the past calendar year. Dating back to the spring of 2019 – excluding the final fall tournament for the Mavs – 15 of their last 22 rounds have been even par or better, with 14 of those checking in under par.
Â
UTA enters play this week with a 291 team scoring average – which would set the all-time single-season program record (currently: 291.09 in 2008-09). Just twice in program history has UTA finished with a season scoring average below 294 (the other was in 2007-08).
Â
INSIDE THE LINEUP
Gonzalez leads the Mavs with a brilliant 71.42 scoring average (-0.58 to par) as the junior has eight par-or-better rounds in 12 opportunities this year and also paces the team with four rounds in the 60s. Cox has a pair of sub-70 rounds to his name in 2019-20, and carries a 73.17 stroke average off the strength of six par-or-better performances.
Â
Hicks has a 74.17 scoring average with four par-or-better rounds, while Cronje brings a 75.08 stroke average into the spring.
Â
Cox, Gonzalez, Hicks and Cronje all competed as part of UTA's lineup in all four fall events. The new addition to that lineup to commence the spring is Cole, who teed it up in two tournaments in the fall as an individual and has a 76.67 average score in those six rounds.
Â
NEXT UP
Just like last year, the Mavs will have an exceptionally-quick turnaround as following action outside Houston they'll head to Palm Desert, Calif., to compete in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate this coming Friday-Sunday, Feb. 21-23, at Classic Golf Club.

THE NEW HOME OF UTA GOLF: Texas Rangers Golf Club
The recently-opened state-of-the-art Texas Rangers Golf Club is the new home of the UT Arlington's men's and women's golf programs. The world's only Major League Baseball-branded golf course, TRGC is the result of a $24 million renovation and updated routing of the former Chester W. Ditto Golf Course at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street, just a few miles north of UTA's campus. The Home of UTA Golf was designed by UTA alumni John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Arlington-based Colligan Golf Design. It features an expansive 23-acre practice area, and a new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse – set to open in early 2020 – will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms and numerous rental and event spaces.
