2/20/2020 5:43:00 PM | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Just three days after its last competitive round concluded, the UT Arlington men's golf team returns to action this weekend in California at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate from the Classic Club Course.
Â
The 54-hole tournament will feature double-tee start times off the 1st and 10th beginning at 9 a.m. Central (7 a.m. local Pacific) each day Friday-Sunday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat by clicking here; updates will be posted on the official Twitter account of the program @UTAMavsMGolf.
Â
The Mavericks will utilize the following five-man lineup on the par-72, 7,305-yard layout:
Â
1) Kyle Cox
2) Paul Gonzalez
3) Caleb Hicks
4) Daniel Cronje
5) Zach Cole
Â
That's the same quintet which just teed it up outside Houston in the All-American Intercollegiate earlier this week. The final round was contested on Tuesday; the Mavs headed directly to the California desert and following action this coming Sunday will have played six competitive rounds in eight days, not to mention practice rounds.
Â
The Mavs improved their team score each of the three days at the All-American Intercollegiate, closing with a final-round 292 on the strength of a 2-under 70 from Kyle Cox as UTA posted an 11th-place showing on a loaded leaderboard.
Â
HISTORY IN THE DESERT
Last February in this same event, UTA tied for 5th place in the 21-team field (same amount of teams this year), bettering its scoring each day: 301-290-286. That final-round 2-under performance represented a season low at the time for the Mavs, and that spearheaded an incredible stretch of golf as nine of UTA's final 13 rounds last spring were below par.
Â
INSIDE THE LINEUP
Despite not recording an under-par round in his last five opportunities, Gonzalez still leads UTA with an extremely-respectable 72.00 scoring average. That even-par average would be the lowest in program history (current record holder: Bobby Massa, 72.42 in 2008-09. The junior has a team-best four rounds in the 60s and eight par-or-better rounds.
Â
Those eight par-or-better rounds are matched by Cox, who carries a 73.00 scoring average. The sophomore led the Mavs earlier this week with a T-26 finish of +1 (217). Cox is responsible for two of UTA's seven total rounds in the 60s this season.
Â
Caleb Hicks enters this weekend with a 74.33 scoring average, while Cronje sits at 74.87 and Cole holds a 77.67. The lineup is exactly the same this weekend as last, with the lone exception of freshman Cronje switching spots with junior Cole in the 4-5 slots.
Â
NEXT UP
The Mavs will have a couple of weeks off from competitive action before resuming their six-event spring regular season on Mar. 9-10 at Appalachian State's Bash at the Beach from the Surf Golf & Beach Club on Myrtle Beach, S.C.

THE NEW HOME OF UTA GOLF: Texas Rangers Golf Club
The recently-opened state-of-the-art Texas Rangers Golf Club is the new home of the UT Arlington's men's and women's golf programs. The world's only Major League Baseball-branded golf course, TRGC is the result of a $24 million renovation and updated routing of the former Chester W. Ditto Golf Course at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street, just a few miles north of UTA's campus. The Home of UTA Golf was designed by UTA alumni John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Arlington-based Colligan Golf Design. It features an expansive 23-acre practice area, and a new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse – set to open in early 2020 – will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms and numerous rental and event spaces.
