ARLINGTON – The Lady Mavs turned in one of the program's best defensive efforts in a 58-32 win over Georgia State on Thursday night at College Park Center.

With the win, the Lady Mavs improve to 17-10 on the season and 11-4 in conference, while the Panthers fall to 8-19 overall and 5-11 in league play.

Marie Benson led UTA with a game-high 15 points. The senior from Waco also added eight rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals. Claire Chastain chipped in with 11 points, six boards and a career-high four steals. Terryn Milton added four points, six assists and four rebounds, while Katie Ferrell pulled down 10 rebounds. Katie Mayhue scored nine points in 15 minutes off the bench.

The Lady Mavericks shot just 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor, but registered 17 assists on their 21 made baskets.

UTA outrebounded the visitors 44-32 and held Georgia State to just 20.8 percent (10-of-48) shooting from the field on the night. The Lady Mavs have now held opponents below 65 points 19 times this season, while also holding this year's opposition below 55 points or fewer on 13 occasions. UTA held the Panthers scoreless in the fourth quarter (0-of-14 FG, 0-of-5 3pt FG), marking the first time in program history the Lady Mavs have held an opponent without a point in a quarter.

The Lady Mavericks forced Georgia State into 23 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those miscues.

The Lady Mavs were slow out of the gate and saw Georgia State take a 10-9 lead after 10 minutes of action. UTA went on to outscore the Panthers 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead at the intermission.

UTA's defensive intensity turned up a notch in the second half as UTA scored 30 points and held the Panthers to just 12 points. Georgia State was limited to just 13.8 percent (4-of-29) shooting from the field in the second half.

The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 29), when they host Georgia Southern (9-18, 6-10 SBC) at College Park Center on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., but the Senior Day ceremony for seniors Marie Benson and Aysia Evans is set to begin at approximately 1:45 p.m.
