@UTAMavsBSB Claim Series Win Over Utah

ARLINGTON, Texas - Behind seven shutout innings from David Moffat, the UT Arlington baseball team (8-3) defeated the Utah Utes (4-6) 8-1 on Sunday afternoon to claim the weekend series two games to one.

Moffat (W, 1-0) earned his third start of the year for the Mavericks, giving up just three hits over seven shutout innings.  Tanner King and Cesar Gomez each pitched one inning of relief for UTA.  King struck out two batters, while Gomez gave up his first run of the year but still secured the victory for the Mavs.

UTA finished the game with eight hits, led by Connor Aube's 3-for-3 day at the plate.  Aube also finished with a team-high two RBI and two runs scored.  Zac Cook (2-for-4, two RBI) and Anthony Dominguez (2-for-4, one RBI) also finished with a multi-hit day.

The bottom of the second was the turning point of the game for the Mavericks.  Phillip Childs beat out a double play attempt to keep only one out on the board before Josh Minjarez walked to put runners at first and second.  Dylan Paul hit a ground ball to the pitcher but an errant throw on a double play attempt at second base advanced Minjarez to third and scored Childs.

Following a Boone Montgomery walk, Sam Gotlieb hit a ground ball to third base.  With the force out at home, the Utes tried to keep the Mavericks from scoring, but the throw sailed over the catchers head, allowing Minjarez and Dylan Paul to score.

Aube and Cook both reach on singles, scoring one run a piece to make the score 5-0.  Dominguez finished the scoring in the second inning with a single to the 5-6 hole and give the Mavs a six-run advantage.

The score stayed at 6-0 until the sixth inning.  Back-to-back RBI doubles from Aube and Cook scored two runs for the Mavericks and increased their lead to eight.

The Utes loaded the bases in the ninth inning and used a double play ball to score their lone run of the day before Gomez forced a pop out to close the game.

The Mavericks will stay in the metroplex, traveling to take on No. 21 TCU at 6:30 pm at Lupton Stadium.
