Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. - The UT Arlington women's tennis team (8-2) powered past Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday afternoon in a four-hour match, winning 4-3 after capturing four singles points, including the tie-breaking point on Court Six.
"I'm really proud of the resiliency the team showed after falling behind in doubles," said Head Coach
Diego Benitez. "We were trailing by three matches early in singles, but the fight the team showed is something to be proud of."
The Mavericks dropped the doubles point, falling behind after losing No. 1 doubles, 6-3, and No. 3 doubles 6-2 but kept at it in singles to come back in the match.
Polina Akimova and
Lucia Natal both fell in singles to make the deficit three points. Akimova lost 6-3, 6-1 on Court One, while Natal fell 6-1, 6-3 on Court Five.Â
Aida Garcia Mendez quickly gave the Mavericks their first point with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Court Four, before
Liz Chileno won her match on Court Three.Â
Momoka Horiguchi took her first set 6-0, but fell in set two 2-6. She rebounded in the final set 6-3 to even the match at 3-3. Â
After falling behind 1-6 in her first set,
Carla Pons dug deep and mustered out a hard-fought 7-5 win in set two to even the Court Six match. With all eyes on her being the match-deciding point, Pons came away with a 6-4 win in set three to deliver the victory for the Mavs.
UTA will have a day off before taking on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton at 9:30 am on Saturday.
