ARLINGTON, Texas – After a hot start to the season, the UT Arlington men's and women's tennis team were both recognized in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings released by the organization Thursday evening. The men's squad came in ranked #85 while the women finish the season ranked #69. This marks the first time that both the men and women teams have finished the season ranked in the same year.
Â
"I'm really proud of the teams," said Head Coach Diego Benitez. "This is a great achievement on their part."
Â
The men finished the season 9-3 overall and were in the midst of a four-match winning streak. Freshman Angel Diaz was becoming a budding star for the Mavericks with a perfect 8-0 record in singles competition and was ranked as high as 110 in the ITA polls. As a team, the Mavs were winning 72 percent of their singles matches, including winning over 80 percent of their matches on courts one and two.Â
Â
The women were not to be outdone finished with an 8-3 record as they prepared or conference matches to begin. The Mavs had won four of their last five matches while beating the likes of Florida Gulf Coast, UConn and Houston Momoka Horiguchi was finding her stride during her junior campaign, finishing 7-3 in singles competition with a 6-2 mark on court two.
Â
On top of finishing the season ranked, both teams qualified for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend next season for the first time in program history. Only the top 85 teams in the country get invited to the prestigious tournament that will take place in February 2021.Â
