LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The UT Arlington women's golf team completed its opening round at the Aggie Invitational from New Mexico State Golf Course on Monday with a first-round 302 and resides in 11th place.
All five Mavericks posted first rounds of 78 or lower:
Madigan Murray (73),
Romina Gonzalez (76),
Connor Howard (76),
Heidrun Hlynsdottir (77) and
Sydney Garber (78).
INSIDE THE SCORES
- Murray had an impressive start in the opening round as she shot even through 16 holes. The graduate student recorded 11 pars and three birdies on holes 3, 8 and 16 as she played the last two holes in +1. She produced an even 36 on the front 9 – her back side – the best of the Mavericks.
- Gonzalez was one of three Mavericks who didn't put anything higher than a bogey on their card. After playing the first 12 holes +2, she posted a +4 over the final three holes.
- Howard began her round on the back side and set herself up nicely sitting at +1 through the first seven holes. She was able to birdie hole 6, but an unfortunate double bogey on hole 10 derailed her momentum.
- Hlynsdottir opened on the 11th and shot even through the first four holes before a double bogey set her back. The junior entered the front side +3 and was able to birdie hole 2. However, back-to-back bogeys were too much to overcome.
- Garber – who began her first round on hole 12 – collected five-straight pars before five bogeys slowed down her momentum. Unfortunately, she would be the lone Mav unable to roll a single birdie throughout the round.
THIS AND THAT
- UTA is tied with Boise State with the best par-3 scoring average (3.00) across the 20-team field.
- The Mavericks recorded 58 pars as a squad – the second-best trailing UC Irvine by just two.
NEXT UP
The Mavericks will continue Aggie Invitational play with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the second round on Tuesday.
