DeBerry Finishes Top-8 Nationally In The High Jump

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UT Arlington's Bryson DeBerry finished in the top-8 in the nation in the high jump on Friday at the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships from the Randal Tyson Center on the University of Arkansas campus.

DeBerry cleared the first three bars, but could not get over the 2.21m (7-3) bar – which would have equaled his personal best and match his own school record. Despite that, he was one of only eight men left competing at that mark as the senior wrapped up an impressive indoor season which featured another Sun Belt Conference title.

Jumping second-to-last in the 16-competitor field, DeBerry cleared 2.08m (6-9¾) on his first attempt to get his championship underway. The next progression placed the bar at 2.13m (6-11¾), and the Plainview, Texas, native cleared that mark on his first attempt as well.

The bar then moved to 2.18m (7-1¾). DeBerry failed to clear that on his first two attempts. However, on his third and final jump to advance, the senior leapt over the bar and into the fourth different height progression.

This time the bar resided at 2.21m (7-3) – which is the mark DeBerry cleared to set the school record back in January. The field of 16 had already been trimmed in half, leaving DeBerry as one of eight men standing.

However, the South Plains College transfer was unable to clear that bar on three attempts, bringing his 2021 NCAA Championship to a close, but not before completing the indoor season as one of the eight best D-I male high jumpers in the country.

DeBerry and his teammates are scheduled to begin their outdoor season next weekend when UTA competes in the TCU Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 20.
