Van Klaveren Highlights UTA's Day 2 At Texas Relays

AUSTIN – Lucas Van Klaveren delivered the 3rd-best decathlon in UT Arlington men's outdoor track and field history on Friday to highlight the Mavericks' second day of the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays from Mike A. Myers Stadium.

After UTA secured five top-5 all-time program records – including two of the top marks in the nation this year – during Thursday's opening day of the Texas Relays, Friday's action was highlighted by Van Klaveren's 7,130 points in the decathlon to rank only behind 7,178 in 2009 from Adolphus Jones and 8,013 in 2013 from Romain Martin in program lore.

More information about Van Klaveren's performances are included later in this release, but the Mavs also had a brilliant performance on the track.

The all-freshman 4x100m relay team of Seth Texada, Dominick Yancy, DaVontay Kennedy and Chidera Agim impressed in their debut, finishing 2nd in the heat with a time of 40.94 to automatically earn one of the nine qualifying placements into Saturday's final.

Among the other notable personal records and finishes for the Mavs on the second day included:
  • Jorrdyn Dunn posted a PR in the decathlon discus with a mark of 29.94m (98-03).
  • Dunn also established a PR in the decathlon pole vault at 3.60m (11-09¾).
  • Those marks helped Dunn set a PR in the decathlon as well with 6,153 points as he finished in 6th place overall.
  • Krystal Igbo set a PR in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.67.
But the spotlight for the day was on Van Klaveren. After registering three personal-best marks on Thursday as part of the decathlon, he picked up Friday morning right where he left off by securing a PR in the decathlon 100m hurdles with a time of 14.72 to finish 3rd and give himself 884 points.

Van Klaveren continued that momentum into the decathlon discus throw, delivering yet another PR – this time notching a 38.32m (125-09) mark for another 3rd-place finish and moving himself within just 32 points of the top-3 on the overall leaderboard and less than 200 points from 1st with three events remaining.

In the pole vault, Van Klaveren tied his personal best with a mark of 4.20m (13-09¼), giving him another 673 points and propelling him into the top-3 with only the javelin throw and 1500m events left.

The penultimate event, the javelin, was the first time all day Van Klaveren didn't set, or tie, a PR, but the Netherlands native still produced a 53.87m (176-09) throw which left him in 3rd place overall entering the 1500m and all but certain of a top-5 all-time program decathlon performance.

Van Klaveren did what he needed in the 1500m (5:02.12) to get enough points to move into the 3rd position all-time as the 7,130 points were good enough for a 4th-place finish in the field overall.

Saturday's final-day slate begins at 10 a.m. with field competition in the discus, and continues all throughout Myers Stadium during the day. Running events commence at 2 p.m., and the Texas Relays are scheduled to conclude with the always-exciting 4x400m relays at 5:15 p.m.

Longhorn Network broadcast coverage is scheduled to get underway on Saturday at 2 p.m., and that will also be streamed via Watch ESPN and the ESPN App by clicking here. Live results will be available all day at relays.texassports.com.
