Mavericks Return To Sun Belt Play in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team will travel San Marcos to take on the Texas State Bobcats in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series beginning Thursday (April 1) at 6 pm at Bobcat Ballpark.  The Mavericks and Bobcats were voted to finish first and second in the SBC West preseason coaches poll.  Friday and Saturdays games will be broadcasted on ESPN+.  Thursdays game can be followed through live stats.

UTA NOTES
  • After going hitless in the 16 games played last season, Boone Montgomery has become the most reliable hitter for the Mavericks.  The junior leads the squad in batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.563), on base percentage (.432), hits (26) and doubles (7).
  • The Mavericks return 90 percent of their innings pitched and 95 percent of their strikeouts from a season ago.
  • The weekend starts for the Mavericks are averaging 9.5 k/9 between the three of them. Tavera leads the group with 13.5 k/9.
  • Josh Minjarez is closing in on a couple records for UTA. He has played in the 6th most games in UTA history and is 15 shy of the record held by Darrell Preston (230, 2001-2004). His mark of 216 games played is also the 5th highest active mark in the country. He also has the 3rd most at-bats (765) and 10th most base hits (213) and total bases (312)
  • Catcher Sam Gotlieb has shown off his arm behind the plate as he has thrown out six runners trying to take second (T-3rd most in SBC) and leads the Sun Belt with four back-picks on the season.
  • Dylan Paul has reached base in 13 straight games, the longest such streak of the season for the Mavericks. The streak also marks the longest of Paul's career, doubling his previous mark of six.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | TEXAS STATE
  • The Bobcats rank in the top four in the Sun Belt in batting average (.267), runs scored (143), hits (228) and home runs (24).  Their hits total is the 23rd most in the NCAA. However, their team ERA is 9th in the SBC at 5.46.
  • Justin Thompson leads the Bobcat offense.  He ranks second in the Sun Belt in hits (36) and RBI (26).  His hit total is the 13th most in the country, while his RBI total is the 34th highest.
  • Opposing teams are hitting .259 off the Bobcat rotation.  Garrett Herrmann leads the Texas State starters with a 2.12 opponent batting average.
  • Texas State is coming off a midweek loss to Baylor (4-2) on Tuesday.  On the season, they have one win over a ranked team, defeated #9 TCU 11-1 on March 9 in San Marcos.
SERIES HISTORY
The two Texas rivals have played each other 115 times with the Bobcats leading the series 70-45.  Texas State holds a 34-17 record over UTA in San Marcos. The teams last played in 2019 with the Bobcats taking two of the three games in San Marcos.
