SAN MARCOS, Texas – Carlos Tavera struck out 12 batters, but it wasn't enough to lift the UT Arlington baseball team (10-15, 1-3 Sun Belt) over Texas State (12-15, 3-4 Sun Belt) on Thursday night, getting shut out 2-0 at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
Carlos Tavera (L, 0-4) started on the bump for the Mavs, tossing 6.0 innings. Tavera tied a career-high in strikeouts, putting down 12 Bobcats on the day. He gave up two runs off five hits. Tanner King tossed the final two innings, not allowing any baserunners.
Â
The Mavericks could only muster three hits on the day. Cason Gregory went 2-for-2 at the plate and reached a third time with a walk. Dylan Paul came away with the other hit for the Mavericks.
Â
This marks the fifth time this season that UTA has failed to score a run.
Â
Tavera was dealing early, as the Fort Worth native sat down 10 batters through just four innings, while allowing just one base runner.
Â
The Bobcats got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff double from Cole Coffey, followed by a sacrifice bunt put the first run 90 feet away. Tavera was able to force a pop out in foul territory and strike out the final out to end the threat.
Â
A leadoff double by Gregory in the sixth inning, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Sam Gotlieb put the first score just 90 feet away. Gregory would be thrown out at home, trying to reach on a ground ball hit to second base.
Â
Texas State used a two-out rally in the sixth to score the only two runs of the game. A full-count solo home run from Justin Thompson started the scoring the Bobcats. Jose Gonzalez followed up with a single, advanced to third by another single and crossed home plate from a wild pitch.
