ARLINGTON, Texas – Kody Bullard threw a career-high eight innings as the UT Arlington baseball team (13-17, 4-4 Sun Belt) evened the series against Coastal Carolina (15-10, 2-3 Sun Belt) 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
"Bullard played outstanding and was tough on their left-handed hitters," said head coach
Darin Thomas. "We played with a lot of energy today to get a good team win."
Bullard (W, 5-2) picked up his eighth start of the season for the Mavericks while throwing a career-high eight innings from the bump. He struck out six Chanticleers and allowed just two earned runs off five hits.
Zach Norris came on in relief in the ninth, striking out two batters and keeping Coastal off the scoreboard.
The Mavericks had another good day at the plate, finishing with nine hits.
Boone Montgomery,
Wyatt Divis and
Andrew Miller each finished with two hits on the day.
Connor Aube,
Cason Gregory and
JD Wadleigh contributed one hit a piece.
Aube led the Mavericks with two RBI on the day. Montgomery, Divis,
Phillip Childs and Wadleigh each finished with one run batted in.
The scoring had to wait until the third inning, but both teams came alive. In the top frame, the Chants used two hits to score two runs. With runners on the corners, a balk scored the first run, before a single to right field drove in the second run for Coastal Carolina.
The Mavericks answered in the bottom half of the inning. A double and a walk, followed by a wild pitch, put runners at second and third. Divis connected on a single to right field to drive in Gregory. Aube followed with an RBI double to tie the game.
Following a walk from
Dylan Paul, Childs reached on a fielder's choice to score the go-ahead run. On the throw to attempt a double play, the Chanticleer second baseman threw it in the dirt, allowing Paul to score from first and give the Mavs a two-run lead.
The Chants loaded the bases in the top of the 5
th, but were held to just one run coming off of a sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks used the seventh inning to pick up insurance runs.
Andrew Miller led off the inning with a single up the middle, before Wadleigh showed off his wheels on a stand-up triple to score Miller.
Montgomery used the next at-bat to hit another single up the middle and drive in Wadleigh. Divis put runners on the corners with a single through the left side of the infield before Aube drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice bunt to make the score 7-3.
