PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The UT Arlington women's tennis team were announced as the Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Champions on Thursday evening at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. It marks the first Sun Belt Conference championship for the Mavericks since joining the league in 2014.
"It's a big accomplishment to go undefeated in the regular season," said head coach
Diego Benitez. "We're very proud of the way they handled those big conference matches are are excited to bring the trophy home to UTA. Now our focus shifts to winning the conference tournament."
UTA completed an undefeated conference regular season in 2021, going a perfect 8-0 against Sun Belt competition. It's the third time the Mavericks have gone undefeated in the regular season in the league but doubled their previous win marks of 4-0 achieved in 2015 and 2016.
The Mavericks went an impressive 35-7 in their matches against Sun Belt competition, sweeping half of the matches they played. Up until the last match of the season, UTA had not allowed the opposing team more than two points in a match, and that happened just one time.
With their regular season conference championship clinched, the Mavericks will look to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament by running the table to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament starting tomorrow (Friday, April 16) at 1 pm CT against #5W Texas State in Peachtree City.
