Unearned Runs Costly For Mavs

JONESBORO, Ark. – Four unearned runs were the difference in the game as the UT Arlington baseball team (16-19, 7-5 SBC) fell to Arkansas State (10-19, 5-7 SBC) on Sunday afternoon 5-3 at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.  Despite the loss, the Mavericks still claim the series over the Red Wolves after taking Friday and Saturday's contests.

David Moffat (L, 3-2) started for the Mavericks, tossing 6.0 innings in the loss.  Four runs were scored with Moffat in the game, but just one was earned.  Zach Norris and Jack Hagan each threw one inning of relief.  Norris threw one shutout inning while Hagan had one unearned run scored against him.

The Mavericks finished with nine hits, but were only able to score three runs.  The Mavericks went just 3-for-18 (.167) with runners on base. Phillip Childs (3), Josh Minjarez (2), Andrew Miller (2) each finished with a multi-hit day. Miller was responsible for all three runs in the game.

The Red Wolves offense was on it early on. A one-out error started a rally that led to three straight singles, scoring one unearned run, and loading the bases. Following a strikeout, a ground ball found its way through the infield to score two more unearned runs for A-State.

The Mavericks made it a one-run ball game in the fourth inning.  Anthony Dominguez Walked and Josh Minjarez doubled to give Andrew Miller two runners in scoring position.  Miller hit a line drive down the right field line to drive in the two runs.

Arkansas State put runners on the corners in bottom of the sixth. A ground ball to third base resulted in an attempted double-play, but the Red Wolves beat the throw at first to score their fourth run of the game.

The Mavericks got one back in the 8th inning.  With a runner on second, Miller connected on another single to drive in his third run of the day and put the Mavs within one run.

The Red Wolves picked up an insurance run in the bottom frame, scoring one unearned run off a sac fly.

UP NEXT
