COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Justin Domangue and
Shelby West wrapped up the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary from Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium on Saturday.
Originally scheduled to run on Friday night, rain and lightning forced Domangue to wait until late afternoon on Saturday to hit the track in the 3000m steeplechase. Competing in the second of three heats, the senior crossed in 9:01.78 to finish 8th in the heat.
That time was not enough for Domangue to advance to the NCAA Championships, but he still wrapped up one of the most decorated careers in UTA track and field/cross country history. In 2019, Domangue became the first UTA athlete to be named a Cross Country All-American.
Rounding out the day, West competed in the 400m hurdles. Her schedule also had to be adjusted as she was originally slated to race at 7:55 p.m., but late Friday night/early Saturday morning it was announced that the 400h would be moved up to 6:30 p.m.
West – who registered the program's 3rd-fastest time in the prelim race on Thursday (59.26) – could not better the performance on Saturday as she clocked a time of 1:00.49 to cross in 7th in her heat. Unfortunately, that time would not advance her to the NCAA Championships; however, she put herself in position on Saturday thanks to the two best runs of her life in the Sun Belt Conference Championships and in the aforementioned prelims.
Despite Domangue and West not advancing, UTA will still have two representatives at next month's NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Earlier this week,
Bryson DeBerry qualified in the high jump, and
Arthur Petersen advanced in the javelin. Petersen will look to win a National Championship on Wednesday, June 9, while DeBerry will by vying for a title on Friday, June 11, on the University of Oregon campus.
