ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington standout pitcher Carlos Tavera has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) / Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region team, announced by the organized on Wednesday. Tavera picked up Second Team All-Region honors in the Central Region.
The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
The junior righty had a record-breaking year for the Mavericks in 2021. Tavera set a program record with 117 strikeouts, leading the Sun Belt Conference and finishing 25th in the NCAA in strikeouts. In six of his 14 starts, he struck out double-digit batters, including a career-high 12 batters on two different occasions. Tavera held opponents to a .177 batting average - the third best mark in the conference.Â
The Fort Worth native left the game with a no-hitter in tact on two different occasions. Against South Alabama (March 19), Tavera went 7.0 innings without allowing a hit, before leaving the game in the 8th. On May 1, Tavera tossed the first nine innings of a combined 11 inning no-hitter, striking out 11 batters and walking just three. It marked the first combined no-hitter in UTA history, longest in program history and the first since 1983. It was also the most innings pitched by a Maverick in a no-hitter and just the second to occur at Clay Gould Ballpark.
This marks the third postseason award that Tavera has picked up. He was named First Team Sun Belt All-Conference as a starting pitcher before being named to the Sun Belt Championship All-Tournament Team shortly after.
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries.
