MOBILE, Ala. – The UT Arlington women's golf team opened its 2021-22 season on Saturday with a 1st-round 307 and resides in 15th place following day one of three at the University of South Alabama Intercollegiate from the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.
Despite the slow start, UTA still has two rounds to make up ground on Sunday and Monday, and resides just 10 shots outside the top 10. South Florida leads the 17-team field following an opening-round 280, two strokes clear of Middle Tennessee (282).
Individually,
Madigan Murray paced the Mavericks on Saturday with a 75 (+3). She was following in close order by
Heidrun Hlynsdottir (76),
Romina Gonzalez (77),
Janane Tan (79) and
Kinsey Ray (79) as all five Mavs broke 80.
- Murray went out in 4-over 40, but a strong 1-under 35 – which featured eight pars and a birdie on the par-4 12th – allowed her to finish strong.
- A Coastal Carolina transfer competing in her first round with UTA, Hlynsdottir began her Maverick tenure with 12-straight pars before unfortunately bogeying four of the next five holes (13-17).
- Gonzalez recorded nothing higher than a bogey on her card and rolled in a birdie on the par-3 8th.
- Ray led the Mavs with two birdies on the round – which came consecutively on the 2nd and 3rd holes – and she was -2 after four holes. However, three-straight bogeys beginning on the 5th slowed the momentum.
- Tan, like Gonzalez, didn't put anything greater than a bogey on her card. After playing the first eight holes in +5, she posted a +2 score over the final 10 holes – which included eight pars.
THIS AND THAT
Hlynsdottir and Murray both registered 14 pars on the day, tied for the 8th-most in the field of 96 … Gonzalez's aforementioned birdie on the par-3, 163-yard 8th was one of only six recorded on that hole all day … the field scoring average on the par-72, 6,002-yard layout was 75.02, and the only hole to play under par on Saturday was the par-5, 453-yard 16th (just -0.01 relative to par).
