MOBILE, Ala. – Led by a pair of 1-over 73s from
Heidrun Hlynsdottir and
Madigan Murray, the UT Arlington women's golf team improved its 2nd-round score by four shots from the opening round, but resides in 16th place after day two of three at the season-beginning University of South Alabama Intercollegiate from the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.
Â
Murray is UTA's low member through 36 holes at +4 (T-34), while Iceland native Hlynsdottir is right behind at +5 (T-41). Sam Houston fired a blistering 14-under 274 in the 2nd round to take the lead by nine shots over Middle Tennessee entering Monday's final round.
Â
The other three Mavericks in the team lineup on Sunday posted rounds of 77 (
Romina Gonzalez), 80 (
Kinsey Ray) and 83 (
Janane Tan) – one day after all five of UTA's rounds were in the 70s in the 1st round. Despite that, the Mavs posted a 307 on Saturday versus the 303 on Sunday.
- One day after opening her UTA tenure with 12-straight pars in the 1st round, Coastal Carolina transfer Hlynsdottir carded 17 pars in the 2nd round, with her lone hiccup being a bogey on the par-5 13th – her fourth hole of the day.
- Murray bogeyed two of her first three holes, but rattled off 10-consecutive pars before rolling in back-to-back birdies on the par-4 5th and par-5 6th to get back to even before closing with a bogey on the 9th.
- Gonzalez led UTA with four birdies in the 2nd round – three of which came in a four-hole stretch from 13-16 to erase a +3 start after two holes. However, a pair of doubles and other bogeys were too much to overcome.
- Ray recorded nothing higher than a bogey on her card and converted a birdie on the short par-5 16th.
- Tan was undone by an unfortunate stretch of seven-straight bogeys from holes 17-5. She also birdied the 16th – one of three UTA players to do so on Sunday.
THIS AND THAT
Hlynsdottir's 31 pars through two rounds are tied for the most in the field of 96 … Murray has 27 pars, tied for the 6th-most … scoring was nearly a shot easier in the 2nd round (74.13) compared with the 1st round (75.02) on the par-72, 6,002-yard layout.
