JONESBORO, Ark. - The UT Arlington women's tennis team (20-2, 8-1 SBC) will end its regular season slate at Arkansas State on Friday at 9 am, looking to capture part of the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship for a second consecutive season. With a win, the Mavericks will finish in a tie for first place with South Alabama and potentially Georgia State as well if the Panthers defeat Georgia Southern on Friday morning.
The Mavericks, who already own the school record for most wins in a season, will look to win their fourth straight match. This will be the third attempt to play the Red Wolves, as the two other contests were postponed due to weather.
UTA is lead by a stellar freshman squad, which includes
Tara Gorinsek (15-0),
Sarina Reinertsen (17-0) and
Ana Paula Jimenez (18-1). The Mavericks are winning their singles matches at a 81 percent rate and have yet to lose a match on court four, sitting at a perfect 15-0.
Liz Chileno has dominated on courts one and two, going a combined 12-4 on the season, including a 4-1 mark in SBC competition.
The Maverick's numbers dip a bit in doubles play, winning at a 69.4 percent rate, but the teams of
Ana Paula Jimenez and
Liz Chileno and
Tara Gorinsek and
Momoka Horiguchi have been reliable on courts one and two. Paul Jimenez and Chileno are 11-1 as a team on court two and have won six straight, while Gorinsek and Horiguchi are 9-5 on court one for the Mavericks.
UTA will prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament following the match, which will take place next week (April 21-23) in Peachtree City, Georgia at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. In the result of a three-way tie for first place in the SBC Tournament, the draws will come down to a draw according to conference by-laws.
