ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington baseball (11-24, 4-10 SBC) lost to the #18 Texas State Bobcats (27-9, 11-3 SBC) by a final of 5-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday night as the Bobcats claimed the series win over the Mavericks.
Michael Wong (ND) was the starting pitcher for the Mavs and gave up three runs on 10 hits and three walks in 5.0 innings with one strikeout.
David Moffat (4.0 IP) took the loss, giving up two runs, zero earned, on four hits and a strikeout.
The Bobcats began the game with four singles and a sacrifice fly to quickly grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Mavs cut the lead in half by plating a run in the second with three hits, including a
Cade Sumbler RBI single scoring
Tyler Rice after collecting a single earlier in the inning.
UTA continued the scoring in the bottom of the third, kicked off with a leadoff single from
Tanner Rice who subsequently was able to advance to third on a failed pickoff move.
Nick Pierce pushed the run across with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Texas State would attempt to counter in the fourth with a pair of singles to put runners on first and second with one away, but the Mavericks defense was able to support Wong with a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. The visitors were able to break the tie in the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead via a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the home half of the sixth, the Mavs pulled even with a
Tyler Rice RBI single, bringing home a galloping
Zach Henry from second base to knot the game at 3-3.
Moffat was cruising in his relief effort until the ninth inning in which four hits and an error helped two unearned runs cross the plate to finish off the Mavericks.
