UTA Stays Steady at 28th in Latest USTFCCCA Poll

NEW ORLEANS – The UT Arlington men dropped one spot to No. 28 in the country in the sixth week of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index, as released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

UTA is the top-ranked team in the Sun Belt Conference, sitting with 73.36 points, and are ahead of several notable programs, including TCU (29th), Miami (31st), Mississippi State (32nd), Oklahoma State (33rd), Nebraska (36th), and others.

UTA re-entered the rankings after another terrific weekend coming at the Michael Johnson Inivtational in Waco. Four individuals sit in the top 11 nationally in their respective events:

3rd) Arthur Petersen – Javelin (79.90m | 262-02)
7th) Joel Bengtsson – 110m Hurdles (13:54)
9th) Bryson DeBerry – High Jump (2.21m | 7-03)
11th) Lucas Van Klaveren – Decathlon (7,760)
  • Petersen stole the show for the Mavs at the Michael Johnson Invitational as he had a mammoth throw of 79.90, breaking his previous school record and moving up to third in the nation in the javelin. His throw overtook the previous stadium record of 76.08. Petersen hit his season's best of 73.45 on his first throw and one-upped that on his third throw, going for 74.88. It was his fourth throw where Petersen reared back and put everything he had behind his huge throw, falling to the track after letting go. He took the week off this past weekend at the UTA Under Armour Invitational.

  • In the prelims of the 110m hurdles at the Texas Relays on March 25, Bengtsson delivered what at that point was the nation's fastest time this year with a blistering 13.54. That mark is also incredibly the 3rd-best in the world this year in terms of those who are eligible/qualify at the time. The 13.54 time shattered his previous best and notched the 2nd-best mark in program history. Bengtsson picked up another gold at the UTA Under Armour Invitational with a time of 13.72.

  • DeBerry broke his own school record in the high jump, clearing the 2.21m (7-03) bar on his third, and final, attempt to also register a PR in the finals at the Texas Relays on March 26. Facing a group of elite competitors, DeBerry finished 4th in the event, but still surpassed his previous record of 2.19m (7-02 ¼) set at the NCAA West Preliminary Round last year. DeBerry took the week off this past weekend at the UTA Under Armour Invitational.

  • Van Klaveren closed out his decathlon debut by crushing his personal best in the decathlon, going for 7,760 points, good for the second best result all time at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14. Van Klaveren has been working on individual events the last few weekends of competition.
The Mavericks will take the week off and prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Championships on May, 12-14 at the Ragin' Cajun Track Facility in Lafayette, La.
