EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore
Arthur Petersen earned a sixth place finish in the javelin to highlight tremendous first day for the UT Arlington Mavericks at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday evening at Hayward Field.
Petersen's finish got UTA on the board in the team standings as they sit 25th after the first evening of competition.
It was Petersen's first throw that got him into the mix as he hit on a massive 76.34m (250-5) to sit in first place after the first round of throws. From there, Petersen could never quite get over that hump with his next five throws as he did not get over 73 meters the rest of the day.
Despite that, it was good enough for Petersen to find a spot on the medal and earn a sixth place finish, the Mavs first top eight finish since Alexus Henry took home the national title in the 2018 season.
Competing right next to the world's best hurdler, junior
Joel Bengtsson got off to a quick start and competed all the way through the 110-meter hurdles in the semifinals. Bengtsson would finish third in his heat and just miss the finals, finishing with a time of 13.65 and a 13th place finish.
Senior
Lucas Van Klaveren had maybe the most impressive day for the Mavs, setting three new PRs in the decathlon to total 4,134 points and sit in seventh place.
After finished 15th place in the 100 meter dash at 11.10, Van Klaveren used a massive final jump in the long jump to hit a new PR of 7.21 (23-8) and finish ninth.
Van Klaveren followed that with a 10th place finish in the shot put at 13.60 (44-7½) and a new PR in the high jump at 1.95 (6-4¾).
It was how he closed the day that really stood out as Van Klaveren cruised to a second place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 46.77.
Van Klaveren will close his day tomorrow, while the women will take the stage tomorrow afternoon.
