ARLINGTON – UT Arlington junior pitcher
Cade Winquest was selected with the 247
th pick in the 8
th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
The Haslet, Texas native moved into the Sunday role for the Mavericks this past season after spending the previous three seasons as the midweek starter for UTA. Winquest finished second on the team with 57 strikeouts on the season – a career high for the hard-throwing righty.
Winquest ended the season strong, earning the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on May 17 after he tossed 8.0 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and one walk in the 7-0 win over App State.
Over his four-year career, Winquest picked starts against Oklahoma, Dallas Baptist, TCU, and Baylor and struck out over 150 batters.
His selection marks the second straight season that the Mavericks have had a pitcher go in the top 10 rounds, following
Carlos Tavera's selection in the 5
th round in 2021. His 8
th round selection is the second highest selection for a Maverick pitcher in the past 10 seasons.
