Lady Mavs Fall In Final Seconds In First Round Of The WAC Tournament

LAS VEGAS – The sixth-seeded UT Arlington Lady Mavericks (14-17) had a late whistle go against them in an 80-78 setback to 11th-seeded Seattle U (6-23) Monday night in the First Round of the WAC Women's Basketball Tournament from Michelob ULTRA Arena.

With under five seconds to play, Seattle U's Peyton Howard drove to her right trying to get to the rim and received the benefit of a foul while in the act of shooting. She knocked down both free throw attempts, and Jireh Washington's potential game-tying response did not fall and was released after the final buzzer sounded anyway as the Lady Mavs saw their season end in heartbreaking fashion.

WAC Player of the Year Starr Jacobs notched her 13th double-double of the year – and seventh in the last nine games – with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Washington also recorded her third double-double of the campaign with 13 points and 10 assists. WAC All-Second Team member Kayla White led UTA with 20 points.

Twice UTA built double-figure leads in the 3rd quarter – 45-34 at the 8:53 mark and 61-49 with nine seconds remaining – and took a 61-51 advantage into the 4th quarter. However, SU commenced the 4th quarter on an extended 17-3 run to establish a 68-64 edge with less than four minutes remaining.

After they got down by as much as five, 75-70, the Lady Mavs still faced a four-point deficit inside of a minute, 76-72, but a 4-0 spurt in 11 seconds tied the contest at 76-all. It remained knotted it 78-78 after Washington calmly drilled a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining before the final sequence.

Seattle advances to face third-seeded Grand Canyon in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time.
