NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Day two of the WAC outdoor championships came to an end with much better weather conditions, perfect for winning conference titles, breaking meet records, and qualifying for finals.
After a fierce two-day decathlon competition with postponed events due to day one weather delays and flooding,
Lucas Van Klaveren claimed the conference title in the event. Van Klaveren started the competition with a 2nd place finish in the 100m with a time of 10.97. He went on to place 1st in the long jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, discus, and javelin. He finished the decathlon with 7457 total points.
Brady Shadrick also earned a spot on the decathlon podium, placing 3rd. He came in 1st in the pole vault and set a collegiate personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12, in the shot put with a 13.39-meters throw, and in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:20.27. He ended with 7049 total points, which is a collegiate best.
Joel Bengtsson broke the 110-meter hurdles meet record in just the prelims with a time of 13.67.
Nolan Walker is also heading to the finals in this event with a qualifying time of 14.41.
Josh Hoekendorf finished 6th overall in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 52.62-meters on his fourth attempt.
Tres Rodriguez placed 7th in the men's shot put with a toss of 15.46-meters on his fourth attempt.
Lauren Walls-Portillo closed the day by finishing 8th in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase with a major collegiate PR of 11:06.50.
In the running events, the Mavericks had several athletes qualify for the finals:
- Jackson Cichon qualified for the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.22.
- Tatyana Terrell qualified for the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 53.85.
- Khalid Mendez qualified for the men's 100-meter dash final with a PR of 10.44.
- Madison Pippins qualified for the women's 100-meter dash final with a time of 11.49.
- Adeyemi Talabi qualified for the women's 100-meter dash final with a time of 11.62.
- Mikeya Washington qualified for the women's 100-meter dash final with a time of 11.62.
The final day of the conference championships starts with field events at 10 a.m. followed by running finals at 3:30 p.m.
