NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The WAC Outdoor Championships came to a close and the Mavericks delivered with multiple conference titles and a weekend full of record-breaking times.
Tatyana Terrell,
Mikeya Washington,
Madison Pippins, and
Adeyemi Talabi started the running finals with a conference title in the women's 4x100-meter relay. The team rounded the track with perfect handoffs and Pippins ran a stellar anchor leg creating a 20-meter gap between first and second. They finished with a time of 44.20, breaking the program record that they set this season at the Michael Johnson Invitational.
Joel Bengtsson delivered in the anticipated men's 110-meter hurdles final after breaking the meet record that stood for nearly 30 years in the prelims just the day before. He claimed the conference title and broke the record again with a time of 13.64.
Tatyana Terrell earned a silver medal in the women's open 400-meter. She broke the school record for the third time this season with a career-best time of 52.79.
After a tough battle in a stacked field,
Jackson Cichon pulled away in a strong finish for the men's 800-meter conference title. He started with a strong 54.93 400-meter split and finished with a winning time of 1:50.03 to claim the gold.
Mikeya Washington and
Madison Pippins crowded the podium in the women's 100m dash. Washington took 2nd place with a time of 11.60 and Pippins was close behind with a time of 11.64 to claim 3rd place.
Adeyemi Talabi finished in 5th place with a time of 11.75.
In the men's 100-meter dash,
Khalid Mendez finished in 4th place with a collegiate personal record of 10.43.
Malaiya Jedkins added another medal for the day in the women's triple jump with a 3rd place finish. She jumped a collegiate PR of 12.71-meters on her third attempt the claim third in the conference. This mark is the fourth-best jump in program history.
Abigail Flores threw a season's best 48.50-meters on her fourth attempt at the women's discus throw earning a bronze medal in the events.
In the men's high jump, freshman
Calen Jones came in 4th with a final jump of 2.04-meters and not far behind was
Erlend Raa in 5th place.
The men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams both placed 4th in the conference.
Zaire Moore,
Shelby West,
Glodis Thuridardottir, and
Tatyana Terrell finished with a time of 3:44.25.
Khalid Mendez,
Adam Herrera,
Jackson Cichon, and
Jarvis Miles closed the championships with a season-best time of 3:10.01.
After a weekend full of weather delays and major flooding, the women's team finished 5th in the conference with 79 total points and the men's team finished 6th with 79 total points.
