Men’s Basketball Secures 3-Star Recruit Makaih Williams

ARLINGTON – New UT Arlington head men's basketball coach KT Turner has signed his first high school recruit as 3-star guard Makaih Williams out of California has committed to join the Mavericks.

The 6-foot-1 Long Beach product chose UTA over Ole Miss, Wyoming, San Francisco, Utah State and others, giving the Mavs even more backcourt depth leading into a highly anticipated 2023-24 campaign.

"Makaih is an extremely athletic guard who can shoot – especially from distance – and scores in a variety of ways: catch and release, and off the dribble," stated Turner. "He's also a very good defender who possesses a high IQ for the game. He wants to learn and reach his full potential; Makaih has a bright future."

Williams (first name pronounced: muh-KIGH) recently completed a post-graduate year at Future College Prep in southern California where he averaged team highs of 21.7 points, 6.4 assists and 3.1 steals over 23 games, while also ranking 2nd on the team in rebounding at 7.7.

The 185-pounder was the 39th-ranked recruit in the state of California after averaging 18.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.3 steals per game as a senior at Capistrano Valley Christian in 2021-22, highlighted by a 34-point outing against Pacifica Christian.

Williams was a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Open Division Second Team selection. He also earned First Team All-League as a senior, and received Second Team honors as a junior and sophomore.

This is Turner's fourth signee of his initial recruiting class as Williams joins Division-I transfers Phillip Russell, DaJuan Gordon and Freds Pauls Bagatskis.
