Looking Back On Year One Of The Van Hook Era

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington Head Baseball Coach Clay Van Hook was announced as the seventh head coach in Mavericks history on July 1, 2022, and made an immediate splash, piecing together a top-tier coaching staff with over 50 years of experience and assembled a recruiting class that was ranked one of the best mid-major classes by D1Baseball.com.

In his first year, Van Hook led the Mavs to new heights amid a conference change. He helped a team that won 15 games the season before almost double that in his first year at the helm, leading the Mavs to 29 victories, including a big win over the 10th ranked TCU Horned Frogs on the road. UTA won seven series' on the year, rattling off five straight WAC series' wins.

In UTA's first season back in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), the Mavs qualified for the conference tournament as the sixth overall seed. UTA defeated the top-seeded Grand Canyon Antelopes enroute to reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

Van Hook transformed the UTA offense to one of the best offenses in program history, placing in the top 10 in five different offensive team statistical categories. Those rankings are as follows:

  • Tied for the third most home runs in a season with 56.
  • Tied for the third most RBIs in a season with 340.
  • The ninth most doubles in a season with 111.
  • Tied for the eighth highest slugging percentage in a season at .440.
  • The fifth most runs scored in a single season with 379.

The Mavs also broke the record for the most home runs hit in a single game as a team under Van Hook's tutelage, hitting eight homers against the Houston Cougars back on March 24 in Houston.

The pitching staff also put themselves in the top 10 of two team statistical categories in the UTA record books:

  • The third most strikeouts in a single season with 411.
  • The third most saves in a season with 17.

With year one in the books, year two is on the horizon and Van Hook is already making some noise with the recruits he's bringing in!
