ABILENE, Texas – Day two of the inaugural Western Athletic Conference Fall Tennis Invitational concluded, which saw a doubles team and two singles players for the UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams move on to the finals that take place on Sunday, Oct. 27, from the John T.L. Jones Tennis Center on the campus of Abilene Christian.
"It was another fantastic day," said head coach
Diego Benitez. "We are eagerly looking forward to competing tomorrow and giving our best effort."
The doubles team of
Yazid Lahjomri and
Pedro Sasso kicked off the day by defeating the No. 1 overall seed, Grand Canyon's Daniel Morozov and Ethan Scribner, 6-3, 6-4. They face off against the No. 2 seed of Brice Patoux and David Wekesa from GCU.
"Yazid and Pedro reached another final," said Benitez.
This is the second finals appearance for Lahjomri and Sasso as a doubles pairing this fall season, achieving that feat back early this month at the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational, where they would win the finals when they defeated Rice's Joshua Mandelbaum and Yair Sarouk.
Andres Medus defeated the No. 2 seeded Daniel Morozov of ACU 6-4, 6-2 in semifinals action.
"Andy performed exceptionally well and managed to defeat a tough opponent," said Benitez. "His opponent had previous success against him, yet he was able to defeat him in straight sets."
Also, in singles action on the men's side, No. 4 seeded Sasso fell to the top seeded Nikita Volonski of GCU in a tightly contested match that went all three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
On the women's side,
Ana Paula Jimenez who is the No. 2 overall seed punched her ticket to finals after defeating Tarleton State's Emma Persson 6-3, 7-5. In two singles matches for Jimenez during the tournament, she hasn't had one match go the full three sets, winning four straight sets.
"Ana once again demonstrated her great composure," said Benitez. "She rose to the occasion in the crucial moments of the match."
Jimenez will face off with Tarleton State's Noelia Lorca tomorrow in finals action with a trip to the ITA Conference Masters on the line.
In doubles action, the team of
Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Jimenez fell to Seattle U's Lamija Avdic and Liliya Dimova in a match that went down to the wire, dropping it 6-2, 4-6, (10-6).
The winners of the invitational will advance to the ITA Conference Masters on Nov. 7 through Nov. 10 in Rome, Georgia, to try and advance to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Waco later in November.
