NACOGDOCHES, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (10-6, 0-2 WAC) looks to bounce back in conference play in their Thursday match against Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
The Mavericks have dropped their first two Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matches in close battles against Abilene Christian and Tarleton State. They fell 4-3 to the Wildcats and 5-2 to the Texans, both at the UTA Tennis Center.
Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez took a tough three-set loss to the Texans to end her ten match winning streak. She has been solid for the Mavericks on Court 3, defeating Abilene Christian in another three-set battle to sit at 1-1 in conference play. She holds a 12-2 overall record.
Tara Gorinsek also remains 1-1 in conference play after taking a tough deciding set loss to Tarleton. She also defeated her Abilene Christian opponent in a strong 6-1, 6-4 win to put her overall record at 12-2.
In doubles action,
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara are the only pair still undefeated in conference play as they sit at 2-0 on Court 2. They took down both Abilene Christian and Tarleton State 6-1 as they hold an 11-3 overall record.
SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS
The Lumberjacks hold a 9-5 record in the spring season and are 1-1 in conference play. In their WAC opener, they fell 6-1 to Seattle then defeated Utah Tech 4-3. The Mavericks hold a 21-3 record against the Lumberjacks after their most recent meeting in 2023, where they swept 7-0. Their last loss was in 2013 at the UTA Tennis Center.
