Mavs Wrap Up The 2024 WAC Outdoor Championships

OREM, Utah – The 2024 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships came to a close and the Mavericks delivered with multiple conference titles and a weekend full of personal bests. 
 
Kaliah Jones kicked off the day for the Mavs when she took home the gold medal in the women's high jump. Her leap of 1.76m was not only her best jump of the outdoor season, but her outdoor personal best. Jones picked up 10 points for her performance while McKinley Novacek finished 4th with a mark of 1.73m, tying her personal record. Novacek secured five points for the Mavs.
 
Day three started with a gold medal and ended with a gold medal as the men's 4x400m relay team consisting of Adam Herrera, Javaris Bonner, Jarvis Miles and Jackson Cichon delivered a season's best time of 3:07.90 to take home the crown. The mark was three seconds faster than their previous best which picked up 10 more points for the Mavs.
 
Winnie Kipsang had herself quite the day picking up two medals, a gold and silver, in the women's 1500m and 800m. In the 1500m, Kipsang took home the gold in dominating fashion with an outdoor personal best of 4:28.22 while claiming the silver in a close 800m race which she finished with a time of 2:08.01. For her efforts, Kipsang secured 18 total points for the Mavs.
 
Alexis Cain provided her personal best of 53.65 in the women's 400m, collecting the gold medal in convincing fashion while in the process. For her efforts, Cain picked up 10 points for the Mavs.
 
In the men's high jump, Calen Jones claimed the gold after a jump of 2.07m. The jump was Jones' second-best mark of the outdoor season. Jones' finish earned 10 points for the Mavs. Miles Jones finished tied for 4th with a jump of 2.02m to pick up 4.5 points.
 
Zaire Moore collected two medals on the day, earning a silver in the 400m hurdles and a bronze in the 100m hurdles. In both events, Moore set new outdoor personal bests, finishing with a time of 58.79 in the 400m hurdles and a time of 13.62 in the 100m hurdles. Moore picked up 14 points for the Mavs.
 
Randon Gray finished tied for second in the men's pole vault with a mark of 5.13m. Gray picked up his second medal of the year after claiming the gold in indoor while his vault also secured seven points for the Mavs. 
 
Lucas Van Klaveren had a busy day, competing in three separate events and picking up points in each. In the men's 110m hurdles, Van Klaveren won the bronze medal after finishing with an outdoor personal best time of 14.03 while in the 400m hurdles he finished 4th with a time of 51.36. His new personal record of 5.03m in the pole vault earned him a 5th place finish. All-in-all, Van Klaveren picked up 15 total points for the Mavs.
 
The women's 200m featured three Mavs in the finals with Madison Pippins, Adeyemi Talabi and Alexis Cain. Pippins took home the bronze medal after finishing with a time of 23.75 and picked up six points in the process. Talabi finished 4th with a time of 23.75, a new personal record, and picked up five points. Cain finished 6th with a time of 24.06 and picked up three points for the Mavs.
 
In the women's 100m dash, Adeyemi Talabi picked up the bronze medal after finishing with a time of 11.71 and picking up six points. Madison Pippins finished 6th with a time of 11.79 for three points.
 
Matro Jepkemboi picked up four points for the Mavs after finishing 5th in the women's 5k with a time of 17:40.51.
 
Marvin Walford finished 5th in the men's triple jump to pick up four points for the Mavs after a jump of 14.79m.
 
The men's team finished 4th overall with 106.50 total points while the women's team finished 3rd overall with 117.50 points. It's both teams second best finish in the WAC, with the men finishing 3rd and the women finishing 2nd back in 2013 during the Mavs first stint in the WAC. The men added 27.5 points (79) from their score a year ago while the women added 38.5 points (79) from their score a season ago.
