UTA Announces 2025 Hall of Honor Class to be Inducted March 1

ARLINGTON, Texas – Former football stars Raymond "Wings" Matthews and Joe Ron Young, men's basketball standout Anthony Vereen, the 2001 and 2002 volleyball teams, as well as the 2007-08 men's basketball team have been selected for induction to the UT Arlington Athletics Hall of Honor.
 
The Hall of Honor class of 2025 will be inducted at a special ceremony on Saturday, March 1 at the Crowne Plaza in Arlington at 6 p.m.. Tickets to the event will be available at a later date and table sponsorships will be available through Friday, Feb. 21.
 
"We're excited about this outstanding class going in the Hall of Honor and are looking forward to honoring these UTA legends on March 1st," Director of Athletics Jon Fagg said. "It's going to be a very special day."  
 
Raymond "Wings" Matthews
Matthews was the 1965 and 1966 team's Most Valuable Player and was a preseason All-American in 1967. Matthews was also named an All-Texas College selection in 1966. His nickname "Wings" came from being one of the fastest student-athletes in the nation.
 
Joe Ron Young
Young was a member of the 1967 Pecan Bowl-winning team that went 10-1 and set several UTA receiving records, including the most receptions in a single game (11 vs. Lamar in 1966). Young was the team's leading receiver in 1966, hauling in 34 catches for 399 yards and a touchdown.
 
Anthony Vereen
Vereen led the Mavericks to their first and only NCAA men's basketball tournament appearances in program history, helping lead the Mavs to the Southland Conference Championship. He averaged 12.1 ppg  and 4.8 rpg during his UTA career, which saw him make 122 appearances and 67 starts. During his senior campaign, Vereen averaged 17.7 ppg and 6.5 rpg. The Houston native spent four seasons in the NBA G League, most recently with the Santa Cruz Warriors (2014-16). Vereen is now an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.
 
 2001 Volleyball
The 2001 UTA volleyball team achieved a stellar 22-12 record on its way to a Southland Conference Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament.
 
2002 Volleyball
The 2002 UTA volleyball team was an impressive 26-7 on the season, winning its second consecutive Southland Conference Championship. The Mavericks made another appearance in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament, also for the second straight season.
 
2007-08 Men's Basketball
The 2007-08 men's basketball team finished the season with a 21-12 record on its way to a Southland Conference Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the first and only such appearance for the program.
