LAIE, Hawaii – The UT Arlington women's basketball team put together their best defensive outing of the season en route to a 61-39 victory over VCU inside the George Q. Cannon Activities Center on the final day of the Hawaii North Shore Showcase.
Everyone who touched the floor for the Lady Mavs recorded a point, led by Miraya Perkins who finished with a season-high 11 points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field while going 5-for-7 from the charity stripe in 19 minutes. Kali Haizlip was the other Lady Mavs who finished with double digit points, recording 10 behind two three-pointers in 24 minutes of action.
The Lady Mavs outrebounded the Rams by ten, 42-32, led by career-highs of seven from Jeanne Rodriguez and Jadyn Atchison.
UTA's defense held VCU to just 24.6-percent shooting from the floor and 17.4-percent from deep. This marks the third straight game that the Lady Mavs have held opponents to under 20-percent from deep, with all three outings coming on the North Shore.
GAME FLOW
VCU quickly went up 4-0 to start the game but the Lady Mavs clawed their way back, tying it up at four apiece before taking a 6-4 lead with 5:22 left in the first quarter. VCU managed to tie things back up at six apiece before UTA would go on another 6-0 run to put them up 12-6 to end the first quarter.
UTA didn't miss a beat to start the second quarter thanks to a layup from Kira Reynolds to go up 14-6. After a three pointer from VCU made it 15-11 in favor of the Lady Mavs, UTA would then go on their third 6-0 run of the game to go up by ten, 21-11. The Rams would record two buckets before the Lady Mavs would go on their best scoring run of the game so far, a 9-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the half at 15, 30-15. VCU managed to hit a three pointer to bring us into the locker room with the Lady Mavs up 30-18 at the half.
Alexsyah Goudeau got the scoring started for the Lady Mavs to begin the third quarter behind a three pointer followed by a made layup from Kira Reynolds to put the Lady Mavs up 35-20. VCU and UTA would exchange 4-0 runs with a little over two minutes left in the quarter. To end the third, the two would exchange baskets with Mila Reynolds connecting on a hook-shot to make it 41-26 to take us into the fourth quarter.
VCU recorded a bucket to start the fourth quarter and then the Lady Mavs would go on a 9-0 run to make it 50-28. VCU would then score another basket before a 7-0 run from UTA would give the Lady Mavs their largest lead of the game at 27, 57-30. VCU managed to get the Lady Mavs lead back down to 22 but UTA would go on to secure the 61-39 victory.
GAME NOTES
- The Lady Mavs never trailed after taking a 12-6 first quarter lead.
- The UTA defense forced 19 turnovers.
- UTA tallied 16 total assists in the game.
- The Lady Mavs defense held the Rams to 17.4-percent from deep, the fifth time in eight games that UTA held their opponent to under 20-percent from the three point line.
- The Lady Mavs bench continued their consistent play, scoring 29 points to its scoring output.
- The Lady Mavs defense held the Rams to just six total points in the first quarter and eight total points in the third quarter.
- UTA had a 42-32 edge on the boards in the win, the fifth time this season they've outrebounded opponents.
- Alexsyah Goudeau, Kira Reynolds and Jadyn Atchison each chipped in with eight points.
- Atchison led the Lady Mavs with five assists.
- UTA shot 48.9-percent from the field, the third time they've shot over 45-percent from the floor this season.

The Lady Mavs return to action in the early part of December when they travel to Arkansas to battle Little Rock on December 2. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT inside the Jack Stephens Center.
