ARLINGTON, TEXAS - The UT Arlington baseball team will host the Houston Cougars this weekend, Feb. 28-Mar. 2 for a three-game series at Clay Gould Ballpark
The Mavs hold an all-time record of 5-13 over the Cougars, including a 2-3 record over the last two seasons.
This will also be the first time these programs face off against each other in Arlington, Texas. All but one game in the series has been played in Houston, with the one exception being a Feb. 24, 2007, game in Frisco, Texas.
GAME NOTES
- Throughout five games, Xavier Melendez and Xander McAfee each hold an average of .333 and are responsible for three out of the five base on balls for the Mavs this season.
- Throughout 6.0 innings pitched, Jack Hagan, who is coming off a medical redshirt season, has been a force on the mound allowing just one earned run throughout 20 batters faced.
- UT Arlington comes into the 2025 season projected to finish seventh place in the Western Athletic Conference, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
- The last matchup between the Mavericks and Cougars occurred last season from April 26-28, which resulted in a series win for the Cougars.
- On Mar. 24, 2023, the Mavs were able to defeat the Cougars 15-2 in seven innings and in that game, the Mavericks set a program record for home runs in a game with 8 moonballs in the game.
- The Mavs feature five true freshman and 23 additional newcomers on the 2025 roster.
- The Mavs pitching staff held an ERA of 5.38 last season, which was the lowest ERA on the season since 2021 when the team held an ERA of 4.28.
- The Mavs were 14-9 last season when they scored first and were 13-2 when out-hitting their opponent.
- Last season, UTA held a record of 11-13 at Clay Gould Ballpark and held a record of 5-6 in their final 11 home games of the season. This season, the Mavs have opened up 2-1 at home.
- During the 2024 regular season, the Mavericks boasted the second-best walks allowed per nine innings in the NCAA with a mark of 2.94. Caylon Dygert led the way on the team with a 1.59 mark on the season, walking just 13 batters in 90.1 innings pitched and ranked 21st in the entire NCAA.
- UT Arlington is scheduled to play nine games against ranked opponents this season. A three-game series with #17 Oklahoma State, a split series against #20 DBU, a split series versus #23 TCU and a matchup down in Austin against the #19 Texas Longhorns.
