LAS VEGAS, Nev. –The third-seeded UT Arlington women's basketball team roared back to defeat the second-seeded Tarleton State Texans 66-55 in the semifinals of the 2025 Hercules Tires Western Athletic Conference Championship on Friday afternoon inside the Orleans Arena.
With the win, the Lady Mavs advance to the WAC finals where they will meet the top-seeded Grand Canyon Lopes on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Lopes are currently riding a 29-game win streak and took both regular season matchups over the Lady Mavs earlier this season.
The Lady Mavs brought the defensive pressure all game long, holding the Texans to under 30-percent from the floor and from deep while limiting the Texans to just 55 points, nine points below their season average of 64 per contest.
UTA had three players finish with double figures, led by Koi Love who finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and one block in 35 minutes. Avery Brittingham finished with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 28 minutes. Freshman Kendal Robinson finished with a career high 11 points off the bench on a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor to go along with one steal in 18 minutes.
Led by Love's four offensive rebounds, UTA did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points.
UTA forced 21 Tarleton State turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Friday's game. The Lady Mavs turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Aspen Thornton led the way individually with three steals.
GAME FLOW
UTA kept it close in the first quarter but entered the second frame down 15-14.
The Lady Mavs then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Texans then came back to take a 24-23 lead heading into halftime.
Tarleton State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 31-29 advantage before UTA went on a 7-0 run to grab a 36-31 lead with 3:31 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Texans had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Mavs still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-39 edge. UTA played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
The Texans proceeded to tie things up at 52-52 before UTA went on an 11-0 run that started with the Lady Mavs only three pointer of the game from Robinson to seize a 63-52 lead with 32 seconds to go in the contest. The Lady Mavs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-55 win. UTA took advantage of eight Tarleton State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of those takeaways.
GAME NOTES
- The Lady Mavs held the Texans to only 29.8-percent shooting from the field, well below their season average of 41.1-percent.
- All five starters recorded a bucket for the Lady Mavs.
- The UTA defense forced 21 turnovers, the 13th time this season UTA forced their opponent into 20 plus turnovers.
- UTA finished with 11 steals, the 14th time this season they've finished with 10 or more steals in a game.
- The Lady Mavs picked up their third victory of the season when trailing at halftime.
- With 2:15 left and the game tied at 52, the Lady Mavs ended the game on a 14-3 run.
- Brittingham went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
- The Lady Mavs scored 36 points in the paint.
- Zoe Nelson led the Lady Mavs with two blocks.
- UTA moves on to the WAC Finals for the first time in program history.
- The Lady Mavs are now 4-4 all-time in the WAC Tournament.
