ARLINGTON, Texas – After an eight-day layoff, UT Arlington women's tennis is back in action with a pair of matches at home. The Mavericks start the week with a match against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at 10 a.m. Thursday.
UTA will wrap up its slate for the week with a bout against the Ragin' Cajuns Sun Belt Conference counterpart — the Appalachian State Mountaineers — at 10 a.m. Saturday. Both matches will take place at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (2-6) fell 4-0 in a midweek tilt with the North Texas Mean Green their last time out. UTA had a number of opportunities at points but couldn't quite seal the deal.
Natalia Gonzalez was ahead of UNT's Marina Adati 7-5, 3-2 before the match was left unfinished on Court 5. Meanwhile, Flora Farkaslaki had battled the Mean Green's Pia Petelinsek to a decisive third set in a hard-fought Court 4 match.
The bout was left unfinished with Petelinsek ahead 1-0 in the third set. Farkaslaki won the first set 6-4. Court 3 was also left unfinished in singles play. Sofia Selle dropped a marathon first set in a tiebreaker, UNT's Lilly Schultz taking the set 7-6 (7-5). The match was called off with Schultz ahead 3-2 in the second set.
All-time, UTA leads the series against Louisiana-Lafayette 14-3, the last meeting between the programs coming in 2022. The Ragin' Cajuns last win over the Mavericks came in 2010. Appalachian State and UTA are tied at one win apiece in the series. UTA won the last bout in 2022.
Scouting Louisiana-Lafayette
The Ragin' Cajuns enter the bout at 4-3 and winners of their last two. Louisiana-Lafayette's last two matches ended in a 5-2 victory over Stetson and a 4-3 win over West Florida.
Angelique Berrat is the Ragin' Cajuns top singles player, coming in with a 4-1 record in dual match play exclusively on Court 1. Her lone loss came at the hands of Florida's Valery Gynina — the ITA's No. 54 ranked singles player — on Feb. 13. Martina Della Gora has also had a strong season, sporting a 3-1 record with a win on Court 2, Court 3 and Court 4.
Scouting Appalachian State
The Mountaineers enter the weekend at 3-5 in dual matches. Appalachian State faces Tarleton State the day before making the trip up to Arlington. The Mountaineers have dropped three close matches in a row, most recently dropping a match against Wake Forest 4-2.
Appalachian State features one of the top singles players in the country in Savannah Dada-Mascoll. The senior is the No. 9 ranked singles player in the country and is 6-1 in dual matches, competing entirely on Court 1. Dada-Mascoll's lone loss came against North Carolina's Ange Oby Kajuru — the No. 6 ranked singles player — in the Mountaineers first dual match of the spring. The Yorkshire, England-native has won her last five matches in straight sets.
