SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UT Arlington delivered a statement victory Friday night, defeating No. 24 UTSA Roadrunners baseball, 15–11, to open the weekend series in San Antonio.
UTA jumped out early with two runs in the first inning before erupting for four more in the second to build an early 6–0 advantage. The Mavericks added another decisive frame in the fifth, scoring five runs to extend the lead and keep pressure on the nationally ranked Roadrunners.
The Mavericks finished with 15 runs on 10 hits, drawing 14 walks and going 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Xavier Melendez led the offensive charge, going 3-for-3 with five RBI and three walks, including a double as part of a career night at the plate.
Harold Laracuente set the tone at the top of the lineup, finishing 3-for-4 with five runs scored and two walks, while
Xander McAfee delivered one of the game's biggest swings with a two-run home run in the fifth inning and finished with five RBI.
UTA also received contributions throughout the lineup, including an RBI double from
Zach Mazoch and a run-scoring hit from
Jackson Hill as the Mavericks consistently created traffic on the bases.
UTSA rallied late, scoring six runs in the ninth inning, but the Mavericks were able to record the final outs and secure the upset victory over the No. 24 Roadrunners.
Pitching Profile
- Caylon Dygert earned the win for UT Arlington, improving to 2–0 on the season after working six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking two.
- UTA turned to the bullpen in the seventh as Landon Murphy covered two innings, striking out two. Jacob Gabler recorded an out in the ninth before Merek Sears entered and struck out two batters in the final two-thirds of an inning to help close out the win.
