ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women's tennis is looking to win its second match in a row when it takes on the Cal Poly Mustangs at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the UTA Tennis Center. The Mavericks play has trended up in their past few matches and a win would give them back-to-back victories for the second time this season.
UTA (4-10) is coming off a 5-2 win over the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The match featured a strong showing in doubles play where the Mavericks picked up their third doubles point of the spring with wins on Court 2 and Court 3.
Flora Farkaslaki, Tasnime Ahamout and Diana Kaibara each won their doubles match — Kairbara and Fakraslaki as the Mavericks Court 3 duo and Ahamout teaming with Natalia Gonzalez on Court 2 — as well as their singles match.
Ahamout competed on singles Court 5 after playing exclusively on Court 6 throughout the spring. The bump up the lineup card didn't phase the freshman as Ahamout took down ACU's Victoria Correa 7-5, 7-5 in a hard-fought match.
Elsewhere in singles action, Kaibara quickly knocked off the Wildcats Court 2 representative Maria Cascos in straight sets. Sofia Selle overcame a 6-0 loss in the first set of her matchup to defeat ACU's Angela Del Campo 6-3 and 6-4 in the final two.
Selle's win on Court 3 clinched the match for UTA, but Farkaslaki put the cherry on top with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory on Court 6.
The Mavericks and Mustangs have met just three times — the last meeting coming in 2014 — and UTA holds a 2-1 edge in the series. The previous match ended in a Maverick 4-0 sweep of Cal Poly.
Scouting Cal Poly
The Mustangs make the trek to Arlington at a 7-6 mark in spring dual matches. Cal Poly has lost three of its last four bouts, the lone win a 5-2 victory over UC San Diego. The Mustangs three losses came at the hands of ranked opponents, starting with a 5-2 loss to No. 22 San Diego State, followed by a 4-0 defeat to No. 54 Princeton and ending with a 7-0 sweep at the hands of No. 2 Pepperdine.
Cal Poly is led by Kennedy Buntrock, who features a 7-4 record in singles dual matches. The senior is 6-4 on Court 1, her other decision coming in a Court 2 victory. Jessica MacCallum has held down Court 2 for most of the spring, working to a 5-4 record as the No. 2 singles player.
Doubles play has also been a strength for the Mustangs. Buntrock and MacCallum have been Cal Poly's Court 1 duo and are 6-4 as a pairing. Natalie Lynch and Candela Aparisi have been the Mustangs lone team on Court 2 where they are 7-4. Three different teams have competed on Court 3 for the Mustangs, combining for a record of 7-6.
