Sinha wins individual WAC crown, Mavs narrowly miss out on team title

MCKINNEY, Texas – UTA freshman Arth Sinha is going to the NCAA championship regionals after hanging onto his individual lead at the 2026 Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship with little drama.

Sinha carded an even-par 72 — his first non-under-par round of the tournament — on the tournament's final day, coasting to a five-stroke victory. The freshman finished 7-under-par overall and led after every round of the tournament.

The Melbourne, Florida-native birdied a trio of holes, bringing his total at the tournament to 13 — the fourth most in the field — and made par on another 12. Sinha had the best score on par-4's of the tournament at 4-under while no other player was below par. The freshman also recorded just one double bogey or worse in his 72 holes, the lowest in the field.

With the victory, Sinha is the first UTA player to win an individual conference championship since Paul McConnell won the WAC in 2013 and the fifth overall.

Sinha will find out his drawing for the NCAA regionals on the 2026 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Show, set for 1 p.m. May 6 on the Golf Channel. Players will be divided into six different regionals running May 18-20.

While Sinha was able to punch his ticket to regionals play, the Mavericks as a team finished just one stroke back of WAC champion Tarleton State in a tournament that came down to the 72nd hole. With the final group teeing off at 18, UTA found itself two strokes back.

Tarleton State's Alvaro Pastor's approach shot found the water off to the right while Sinha stuck his on the green, giving the Mavericks a very real chance to pull even. Pastor, however, executed a near-perfect chip on his fourth shot that checked up within a few feet of the hole.

After Sinha couldn't quite get his long birdie putt to fall, Pastor finished off his one-putt bogey, allowing Tarleton State to narrowly avoid a collapse and escape with the team title. Sinha made par, securing his individual title.

Another UTA freshman also finished top five individually. Nicholas Lyman matched Sinha's even-par 72 in the final round, placing him in a tie for fourth place. The Surprise, Arizona-native finished even-par for the tournament and birdied 15 holes overall, the third most in the field.

Jen Chie Huang turned in one of his best performances as a Maverick in the final round. The sophomore subbed in for the second round, but left his mark on the final day of the tournament by posting a 2-under 70, the best among UTA players and tied for best in the field overall. Huang birdied five times and made 11 pars.

Ajay Morris wrapped up his tournament with a 3-over 75. The freshman tied for 17th place at 8-over.  Matthew Broder subbed back in for Michael Chevalier. The junior eagled the par-5 seventh hole en route to a 10-over 82 final round.
