ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington right-hander
Caylon Dygert has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week after a dominant outing in the Mavericks' series-opening win over Utah Tech on Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Dygert was at his best in the 2-0 victory, tossing seven shutout innings and holding the Trailblazers to just three hits while striking out seven. The junior right-hander worked efficiently through the heart of a Utah Tech lineup that entered the weekend with conference tournament implications on the line, keeping UTA in command throughout.
The Trailblazers never crossed the plate against Dygert, who retired the side in order multiple times and stranded runners when Utah Tech did find its way on base. He exited after seven innings with the shutout intact, allowing the UTA bullpen to close out the 2-0 win.
Merek Sears and
Hayes Melville finished the job in relief, with Melville earning the save.
Dygert's performance set the tone for a pivotal weekend series. UTA went on to take two of three from Utah Tech, with Sunday's series finale — an 8-5 walk-off win in 11 innings on Senior Day — clinching a berth in the WAC Conference Tournament. The honor is Dygert's first this season and comes at a critical stretch of the season as the Mavericks head toward postseason play.
